BRENDAN O’CONNELL
Director of Football
Brendan O’Connell’s journey through the world of soccer is one of both elite achievement and heartfelt purpose. Born in London, Brendan signed his first professional contract at 16 with Portsmouth Football Club - launching a playing career that would see him compete at the highest levels of English football. Over the course of 451 league games and 79 goals, Brendan earned a reputation as a dynamic, intelligent and dedicated midfielder. His career spanned top-tier clubs, instilling in him not only a deep understanding of the game but also the discipline, resilience and passion that now define his approach to coaching.
After retiring due to injury, he transitioned into coaching at Wigan Athletic, where he helped shape the club’s youth development structure before becoming a first-team coach. Since relocating to Canada, Brendan has held key roles in Canadian soccer, including Head Coach at the University of Calgary and Sporting Director at a leading youth club where he continued to elevate local talent, drawing from decades of elite-level insight. His extensive network across the UK and internationally gives players rare exposure to global opportunities, while his high standards and authentic mentorship create an environment where young athletes thrive - on and off the field.
Those who’ve worked closely with Brendan speak to his integrity, intensity and transformative impact. Paul Mitchell, Sporting Director of Newcastle United, credits Brendan for shaping his foundational years as a player, while Rob Gale, professional coach and former Canada Soccer national team leader, calls Brendan one of the most “authentic and realistic coaches in Canada,” with the ability to deliver true high-performance programming.
For parents seeking a coach who not only understands the professional game, but who also values character, community and long-term development, Brendan O’Connell offers a rare combination: global pedigree and genuine care. Entrusting your child’s soccer journey to Brendan means placing them in the hands of someone who has lived the game at every level - and is now dedicated to passing that knowledge on to the next generation.
